Read Chapter 12 in Dutton (also 12 in Sherman) to learn about European exploration, discovery and empire building.  This is the moment we generally begin American History courses.  After Columbus did his thing in 1492, the pace of exploration really took off, and the Pope had to intervene to keep his two most supportive countries from going to war with the Treaty of Tordesillas.  Other burgeoning naval powers had to work around this treaty for their own exploration and empire building.  The book(s) note (briefly) the search for the Northwest Passage.
For this week’s assignment, do some searches to learn more details about this Northwest Passage.  How far did the French and English get in their yearly journeys to find this elusive pathway to the East?  Did any ships make it from the Atlantic to the Pacific using this route?
