Play It As It Lays

Discuss the significance of history or time past in the novel. What meaning does or does not the past hold for Maria Wyeth? Given the past as significant or not, how does the character’s attitude toward the past regulate or influence the present? Does her attitude toward the past change over the course of the narrative? Is there some final insight that the character comes to through the course of the novel relative to her understanding of the past and (more importantly) the future?
