All designs invoke specific ideas about the capacities and qualities of human beings from the design of chairs to algorithms. Our very first reading by Viktor Papanek addressed this issue. Accessible and Universal design efforts incorporate the perspectives and needs of disabled people, but such work also exhibits prejudices by viewing disabilities in a negative manner as problems to be fixed. We examine the history of universal design; how we might de-medicalize design; and think about a form of disability gain as a positive contribution to being in the world.
